I made this zine during the fall of my sophomore year at St. Edward’s University. It was the first major project in “Publishing as Artistic Practice." The purpose of the assignment was to create a publication using the riso printer, which can only print two colors at a time and has a limited color choice. I digitally drew and formatted a 16-page booklet using one sheet of 11x17 paper so we could share a personalized publication with our classmates and peers.

After choosing my topic, I went through notes I had made in years where depersonalization was hitting me the hardest and wrote down phrases I had said then. From there, I made thumbnail sketches to go along with specific text I had pulled from those notes. I made the art first using the digital art program PaintToolSAI before putting the png’s into Illustrator and implementing the type. Jimmy then suggested that I be more playful with the type, so I messed around with the Direct Selection tool and made the font a bit more inventive and overlapped the text with the images so they felt more cohesive and less like captions.

I had to do multiple iterations in order to get them in proper printing order, which involved making many dummy prints on white computer paper. The zine turned out really well! I ended up sending it to a zine show in New Orleans and it is something I’m still really proud of, even after many years.
